Hello fellow Lepidopterists! I am taking 18 students to Peru to study and photograph butterflies this June and my group is part of our university’s “Day of Giving” fundraiser to help students get funding for the trip. Please help me get these students to Peru by donating $5 to the Colorado Mesa University Foundation. The group with the most donors (not $$$) by the end of April 10th receives $5000 in addition to the donations. Donate at the link below: c-fund.us/ku1
It’s Science, it’s education, it’s helping students! Thank you all so much, and thanks to everyone who has already donated. I’m not a good salesperson, so I appreciate all you have done to help my students! If you would like more information on the project, just let me know and I’ll be happy to talk with you. Thanks everyone for your support! Matt

Several years ago I had set up my MV light on the side of the Grand Mesa in western Colorado and had no luck collecting much of anything for hours. It became quite chilly and nothing but LBM were flying around the light, so I decided to pack it in for the night. On my way back to town, I just happened to stop by the lights illuminating the local ski area's sign. To my astonishment, two Catocala relicta were hanging out upon the sign. Freaking out, I got them both in my jar, my first ever of that species, and then danced around in delight. They were the only two specimens worth while that entire evening. The next year I collected more on the mountain in a nearby spot.

Still buried in snow here in Colorado... We have over 100% snowpack this year, so the butterflies in high altitudes should be very good this July. I can't wait! High altitude butterflies are my favorite. Erebia magdalena, Oeneis bore... Aww, I want to hike those passes... First however, I'll spend a month in Peru with students... I can't wait for those jungle species! It will be overwhelming to see them again!

Wow! That is one awesome looking Hemiptera (true bugs).
It's not a beetle, they are in the order Coleoptera. Hemiptera are a separate order of insects that contain bugs like squashbugs and box-elder bugs.
He's very cool!

neominois , I have edited your link which was wrong, the good one is : www.gofundme.com/scientific-study-in-peruI hope you will find enough funds, won't be easy. My experience from funding is that you should contact each companies of your cities, newspapers and even big US firms. You will get much more money than asking to individuals. Congrats for organizing such trips, I hope it will be a success ! Thank you, would it be okay for me to re-post the GoFundMe link as a new thread in the forum? Perhaps some fellow Lepidopterists would be interested in donating.

Thank you all for the ideas. I know Yellow Fever is required, as why my students must get it. I have never attempted a gofundme venture, perhaps I should look into in. I wouldn't need a lot of money, you are correct, just enough to lessen the financial burden of the students.
Luehdorfia, thank you for your idea, perhaps looking into some local organizations, or businesses would be a possibility.
I am just very frustrated in the lack of interest the University itself has given us. I thought the possibility of promoting the college through this trip and potential publication would be a great incentive, but I guess I'm not a priority.
Thanks again guys!

I have removed abdomen promptly after collecting all Morpho and placed it in paper towels for storage. Heck I think this should be done for some Pieridae as well, some of them release material and ruin the wings as they are in the envelopes.

Hello! I'm not sure I am posting this in the correct place, however I have a question for you all.
This summer I am taking a group of college students to Peru to research, photograph, and collect Lepidoptera. We had a setback of sorts last week when we learned that the required vaccinations were not located in our area due to a yellow fever outbreak that occurred in Brasil. Our students now have at least a 250 mile drive to receive a series of vaccinations that cost upwards of $250-$300.
The short of it is that it is causing a burden in cost for our students, who are already stressed with the initial costs for the trip. My University, Biology Department, and admin refuse to help out with any costs, hell I could not get my Dept. Chair to finance one collection permit to bring back specimens for the school. All of these extra costs I'm picking up myself.
My question is... Do any of you know potential grants or funding I can look into to help lessen the burden of cost for my students? The class would involve documenting and photographing Leps for a publication on ecology and conservation.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated,
Thank you!
Matt
