Hello all,
I have just recently begun dabbling in morpho butterflies and I have received a pair labeled as morpho coerulescens. Is this a proper taxonomic identification, or what it its proper modern taxonomic name? I cannot find morpho coerulescens listed anywhere in my usual sources, I am coming up with nothing trying to figure this out. Any help at all would be very appreciated. Thanks
Andrew

I don't specialise in Morpho, but for my dabbling, I use the fairly recent taxonomy by Patrick Blandin. His list is here: www.patrickblandin.com/fr/zooms/10-publications/publications-autres/15-checklist-du-genre-morpho-fabricius-1807-His set of books is excellent, by the way. I've just checked, and "coerulescens" doesn't appear to be a valid name; it's likely just an artificial or invalid name used by dealers. Is your pair from Costa Rica? Google shows references to that name attached to CR specimens. If so, it's likely a subspecies of M. helenor in reality. There are multiple ssp from CR, but yours are probably limpida or marinita.

Thank you very much for the reply, I guess I should have gone with Blandin in the first place, looks like I will be renaming a bunch of others I thought I had figured the name out for. Yes, the pair is from costa rica, but goodness knows I will never be able to figure out which subspecies of helena lol.
