My earliest memory of a butterfly was at the Carlton Hotel in Bournemouth. It was an Aglais urticae sitting on a curtain in the tea room that started off my fascination with butterflies at a very early age.

Hello everybody - I'm Mathias from Poland ( Krakow )34y.o I'm ordinary biologist ( master in ecology of invertebrates ) and landscape architect ( renovation/ restoration historic landscape ) working as an architect. Last 7 years I have lived in Stockholm - reunited with my parents after some time of separation ... collecting insects since I can only remember. My first collection up to my university time burned in fire, only some very sentimental pieces was saved - 5 boxes ... when I moved to Sweden I started collecting again (depression pushed me to do something what makes me happy ) My subject - Lycaenidae - at the Uni I worked with Maculinea/Phengaris arion ... my new collection is only enveloped for now - have no idea do I wish to stay in Sweden.

Hello, I'm Michel a French biologist from South Western France, just retired for a few months... My passion for insects started as I was very young, mainly for butterflies, moths and coleoptera as for many entomologists. So I collected principaly European species and was especially interested with rearing and observation in the field. But later on during some periods with job necessities and other constraints, entomology was sometimes forgotten ! Any way I also enjoyed a lot to travel, sometimes for months as my long trip through South America during one and half year just before to start a phD. in aquatic ecology. From Andine chains to the sea through a lot of different environments, and going down all amazon river. I was also working (Fish stock assessment)in Java, Algeria, Mauritania, Angola and finally in France in Bordeaux (estuarine ecology). For almost 20 years I'm not collecting anymore, or very few specimens. I started photo and it was enough for me with observing and rearing French moths ad butterflies. Still some exotic coleoptera also, like Hercules sp and cetonids like Eudicella sp, with a lots of interbreeding. However books about insects and mainly butterflies and moths interest me also a lot. Especially from past centuries, with very nice plates. Therefore I collect more books or plates than alive specimens nowadays ! And I'm not alone to do this here! I also like to study entomologists history and I've written some papers about some well known French ones.

Hello, I am Zdenek Faltynek Fric from Czech Republic, living close to Ceske Budejovice (Budweis). Maybe you have heard about this place due to (in)famous beer and many people hate me because my responsibility of Phengaris instead of Maculinea. :-) Butterflies are my hobby as well as profession as I work as researcher at an Institute of Entomology under Czech Academy of Sciences. World is for me small so I study them worldwide. However, as there is too much of species, I am usually limited to Lycaenidae and Nymphalidae. Well I have registered to this site in the middle of December, but unfortunately I was in combination of rush and sclerosis so I would like to apology for the delay between registration and presentation.

I guess it is my turn now, I am Jens I live in The Netherlands. I am 18 years old and started this year with my study Applied-biology at has in Den Bosch.
I always had an interest in butterflies, I never remembered when it started I know I got a butterfly encyclopedia when I was 7 because of my interest In butterflies. I started breeding butterflies 5 1/2 years ago and after that i started collecting. The problem was always that I lived in zeeuws-vlaanderen which is an area with only the most commun butterflies. A cardamines is in this area a rarity and this butterfly is almost everywhere common. So most butterflies I have in my collection were from friends or bought on ebay but much specimens were not great quality.
That's it i think

GREETINGS!
I am Jean-Benoit Duval, and I'm into entomology since as long that I can speak. Since 2012, I am principally interested into butterflies, more particulary satyrinae, papilionidae, lycaenidae.
But on a wider scale, everything interests me ; from coleoptera to noctuidae, from mecoptera to diptera. I collect insects following a "fill-in the blanks" patern. I might need sometimes a tiny bit of effort to collect, let's say, a small nitidulidae, but it becomes quickly rewarding to add such a specimen to a growing collection.
My curiosity is both natural and volontary.
I'm 26, I'm from Montreal, Canada and I mainly speak french (salut!).

Welcome on board Jean-Benoît.
I was - or should I say : I am still dreaming to a field trip in Canada & Québec - even St Pierre & Miquelon seems interesting.
May be one day
Amicalement, Xavier
