True that public founding of National Museums is an issue. Year after year, less money.
Museums should accept and organize private foundings to improve their economic health.

This post made me stick to whyvI dislike buying things on Ebay! I have done this with Parnassius butterflies. Had a couple of opportunities to aquire some nice, hard to get species like P. baileyi, P. charltonius, and P. autocrator for a decent price. I would have a good bid going till the last day, were if it was $60 then all of a sudden it's $150.

some others like to buy entire collection (or you keep it for you, or you keep what is interesting you and sale or give the rest) another way is to co-finance expedition (need confidence and the hunter)) for a part of the material.

it is yet the case in Germany (and in USA ?) It's funding, with a 'u' (that sounds funny if you think about it, lol.). As far as I know German Museums are not swimming in money, they can't really afford big research projects, but they are doing fine in their day to day business. In the US it always depends on if their financiers are up to buy new stuff or not, this can change at any time. I would say the problem is not only a problem of museum funding, but a general problem of funding in science, the staff of museums are researchers and therefore bound to scientific funding. Pretty much in all of Europe it's heading to a point where it's not worth the effort. The wage is not adequate in respect of the the things you have to give up (job security, private life). This is even the case in Germany, so let's not talk about any Southern European countries. Considering the stories I have heard from there, I wouldn't even bother to get out of bed in the morning, or open up a bakery, but never work in science.

In the US, this has been the model for a long time. Many of the great public museums got their start from private donors. Here in the east, the Field Museum in Chicago, The Smithsonian institution in Washington and The Carnegie Museum in Pittsburg are named after their initial benefactors. All receive some public support (I think) and the US National Collection of Entomology is at the Smithsonian and many of the curators or government employees,. But they really rely on a blend of admission fees and private donors to support operations and staff.

I stopped trying to figure out the mentality of some eBay bidder's years ago And this is why I never bid. I only go for the "Buy now".
