For my class I'm identifying different kinds of bees and wasps. I found this one but am not quite sure what it is. Our teacher had shown us an infographic to go off of. The reason I think it was Sphecius specious is because I think it was killing a Cicada before I snapped the picture. But if anyone can help me out that would be great in pointing me in the right direction. Thanks!

The wasp in your photo belongs to the genus "Vespula". These are commonly called "yellow jackets". There are over 20 species found throughout North America ( counting accidental introductions).

s. specious is MUCH larger and more black.

Definitely Vespula as Trehopr said. Maybe V. germanica or pensylvanica from the spot pattern, but without more pictures there's no way to be sure.
My guess is pensylvanica because the underside of the antennae is orange which I don't believe germanica has. I'm definitely not an expert though.
