I live in the UK. Over the last few months I have found a couple of these crawling around my bathroom and kitchen. Can someone please help me identify them?

It is a beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae (weevils). I am largely unfamiliar with the beetle fauna of the UK however, I am certain it is well known in the collecting community over there. It's probably pictured or figured in some well known book(s) over there. You may be finding it in your home because it may be associated with some contaminated grain product you have present in your home. Check dry dog food, cereal products, seed product etc. Dispose of the infected product and no more weevils.

This is the gardener's nightmare, the dreaded and now common Vine Weevil, Otiothynchus sulcatus that arrived here from Europe and is common in North America. The larvae feed on the roots of plants, often killing them, especially those in pots. There are quite a few pest control products just for this species on the market.

Thanks for your responses. That also explains why they make a horrible crunching sound stepped on.
