Some discussion going on in one my Facebook groups about these caterpillars. Located in someone's backyard in Riverside, California. Nobody has come up with an answer yet. My first impression was American Painted Lady or perhaps California Tortoiseshell, but they are not an exact match. I've been told by a botanist only that this plant is a "bean". So, this may be a moth larvae, not a butterfly. Any ideas?

Looks like it. It's a pity the Project Noah webpage is so full of errors, don't they have an editor? For example at the top of the picture the genus name Uresiphita is written with a small u. Further down the page the first sentence in the 'Notes' section reads: "The genista caterpillar, Uresiphita reversalis, also called sophora worm, is the larva of the genista broom moth, Lepidoprera pyralidae." I have never heard of a species called "Lepidoprera pyralidae" Of course it should read '(Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)' to be correct. Adam.
