This was found crawling across the lawn here at the inn in Kampala. I'm assuming it's a beetle larva (I can't imagine a moth being this large), and am wondering if anyone can help narrow down the identification? (Also, how would I know if it's ready to pupate? And what sort of housing should I be keeping it in?) Thanks in advance! Tom

I think it's some sort of moth larva. It seems to have prolegs on the abdomen, whereas beetle larvae only have 3 pairs of thoracic legs.
I would expect that it was looking for a place to pupate when you found it. Try putting it in a box with earth in the bottom and dead leaves on top, and see where it spins its cocoon.

it could be a real good thing to not post twice the same subject on the two sites !
if it is a question, put it on one site, wait a reasonable time and after if not receiving an answer, put it on an other site.
It is a little bit annoying for those that follows the subject and those that participate.

Thierry,
I just think that Tom wants to optimise the possibility of getting an answer. Do you have any idea what it could be?
I seem to remember that I have seen something like this larva here in Thailand many years ago, but don't remember what it is.
Adam.

It is a little bit annoying for those that follows the subject and those that participate. While I completely agree with you, I was faced with the worry of accidentally killing the insect by not caring for it properly. So I posted on both sites hoping to get a response quickly from someone. Had I not received a response I was going to let it go tonight. So I'm afraid that my fears won over my better sensibility of posting the identification request first here, and then elsewhere after a few days. Thank you for your responses Thierry, truly they are appreciated.
