Aberrations in British Butterflies have always been very popular with our collectors. There have been three books on the general subject of butterfly aberrations. Although only showing aberrations of British species these books are useful in the naming of aberrations that occur in Europe and elsewhere.
Varieties of British Butterflies by Frederick William Frohawk 1938.
There are 200 pages with 48 colour plates by the author . Frohawk is regarded as one of the greatest ever butterfly artists. The original plates of this book were destoyed during the World War II and in the reprint of 1946, they are on a lesser quality paper. The first edition in good condition is now a scarce book. Shown below is my copy of the 1946 reprint.
Aberrations of British Butterflies by A.D.A Russwurm 1978.
This work has 151 pages with 40 colour plates by the author figuring 300 major aberrations with information of their captures and localities. Don Russwurm was one of the great butterfly artists and his figures of specimens are a work of fine art. There is section with details of some of the aberrations of the different butterfly species in Britain.
Variation in British Butterflies by A.S. Harmer 2000
This really is a sequel to the last book but has a much more detailed text. The book has 293 pages with 84 magnificent plates featuring 400 figures again painted by A.D.A Russwurm. There are 53 colour photographs including over 20 of rare and extreme live aberrations in the wild. In Part one, there is a complete biography of the late A.D.A Russwurm who took many rare aberrations himself and which are now in the collection of Harmer. Part two contains three chapters, Genetics, Variation and Breeding. Part three contains the colour plates. This is a great and enjoyable read.
For collectors of the aberrations of Lysandra coridon, the Chalk-hill Blue there is ' A monograph of the British Aberrations of the Chalk-hill Blue butterfly ( 1938) by P.M. Bright & H.A. Leeds.
