That's right they are locusts. They also eat pupae of butterflies and moths but I said I prefer them to be in my display drawers than in my stomach

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Our expedition to Turkey (25th April to 6th May) was suspended for an indefinite term. But it doesn't mean that collectors have to refuse trips to this country for the purpose of collecting biological material, opposite the purpose of my report prepare all others for the maximum concentration and determination further to study, and to observe the most rare insects of Turkey. Of course, it would be desirable that trips of our compatriots passed also productively as ours and were focused not on Antalya & K, and on tiny corners of the remained nature of Turkey where it is still possible to be surprised with an unexpected find. The Turkish gendarmes for the collector not a sentence, they are rather ground on observance of a law and order in broad understanding. At most that they can check it documents and light at night in a car trunk or a waiting room of tent. Here it is necessary to be careful of flattering and mean shepherds who are ears of gendarmes. Despite the seeming hospitality the most part from them at a meeting with the tourist reports at once about your location in gendarmerie, and it means that in the evening or it is necessary to wait for guests at night. We knew about it and could beat easily gendarmes moving from place to place, and even to light at night. It is possible to go with a net in Turkey. It is desirable to choose the closed corners, edges, canyons. It is possible to hunt and in Turkish National. Parks if it is so possible to call them. Lately process of an urbanization and growth of the farmland assumed the terrifying scale, insects and so forth to inhabitants have no place to live. That in Turkey didn't finish wheat fields, achieves sheep and goats, and the remains of the pure nature is built up with dachas thus filling up everything with garbage heaps around. In such conditions any detached onlooker knowing the price of an insect even being the photographer, will involuntarily want to take with itself the found material. Sometimes it seems that such biotope needed to live a little. Bugs, unique on the beauty, potter about in the rotten decaying garbage material, and bright butterflies sit down on rare flowers of hardy Asian plants. Whether it be the biological material, or an insect crushed on roads from a wastebasket all this natural variety of Turkey protected by the law. Of course, not all territory of Turkey is a wastebasket, differently we wouldn't go there, but at such severe laws and penalties it is quite good to address and to himself, having brought an order to land use (differently the feeling is created that the tourist who took an insect or his part does bigger harm to environment, than thousand herds of sheep, tons of garbage and uncountable settlements). The worst line of the entomological researcher – self-confidence, irresponsibility but how to define that line behind which there is a payment? And in general, what to be afraid even to "collector smuggler" in Turkey if to bring together valuable insects (commercially) for short term (and even half a year) in general an impracticable task? Coordinate of 37.21998N ,034.55930E became for ES across Turkey the last. This place not the territory National Park!!! This time we avoided any presence at any National Park as before. The stay purpose is more rest, photo, there after a nourishing lunch. Everything occurred instantly and unexpectedly, undoubtedly we were stukanut again by shepherds. On this primer we went and before, but this time the canyon was in picturesque fog, and it was necessary to be passed on it with a camera. In general, in Turkey very beautiful types of the passing fog. It as the fakir stupefies the head. I don't respect lawful keepers of the Turkish parks and the remained nature. In my opinion they more stupid attendants, than guards. They don't know the true value of own homeland, they don't know that protect (I mean at least insects), they don't even know where what look lives. Ain't give a shit all the most interesting, main work facade. I Love Turkey for its interesting and poor finds, picturesque places, I love in the morning or in the evening slowly to walk by car on micro tops. Here it is possible to find the interesting much. There is such division in Turkey – forest gendarmerie, they know signs of violators, but anything that they look for much. Their task – it is possible to slap as more loudly. This time we really relaxed. Relaxed as two fiery salamanders at edge of a roadside. It was possible to lead round round a nose forest gendarmerie and that time when the exit was closed, but flattering fog too weakened an instinct. Some easy notes of the approaching danger were felt, but beauty of a landscape stupefied, even a moment and a rustle of wheels of the Turkish car put the end to this game. Only two slaps and a friendly smile to the foreigner, then despair, rage, hatred to indifference. We were kept in gendarmerie by about 4 hours. Gendarmes of ten times photographed our passports, us and our collecting. Nobody spoke Russian or in English. They didn't even report in consulate about our detention. They made a form of a penalty and tried to compel us to sign these documents, but we didn't sign documents! Returned us passports and released at night. There was first o'clock in the morning. The mood was spoiled for 100%, there was no wish for anything, is, to sleep, there was a wish to get rid quicker of this madhouse and to leave home! They confiscated our insects, but on insects they have no labels. Thus observers of nature protection in Turkey try to confer responsibility of destruction of the nature on collectors of insects...
Be very-very carefully in Turkey, if you collect insects!!!
Have a good luck in your collecting expeditions.
Have a good health and good mood.
Greetings, Anton Kozlov & Roman Gortovannyi.

Dear Anton,
Thank you for choosing the ICF to explain us what happened. In your message, I can feel how a great collecting trip became a nightmare. I can feel how some insect lovers have been arrested.
Stupid laws don't have to be enforced, they have to be changed. Turkish authorities should better deliver some collecting permits to foreign entomologists and use the money to better protect their nature. The truth is they don't care about nature, about entomoogy.
My advice is : don't collect in Turkey.
