Yes the laws are stupid but there isn't much which can be done and that is why Turkey will never join the EU. They should have a process to issue collecting permits (without bribing anyone). Spain is a country which leads by example. You get the permits, obey the conditions and you do not have problems with the authorities and this is how the civilised world should be....just like Spain.

Very good Satyrinae, are there any protected species in Spain, how about the endemic apollos?

Agree Spain is a great example of countries with permits.
I would also be grateful to countries where collecting don't even require permits and where you can hunt without any problem (France, Italy, Russia and many other).

It is so ridiculous with almost all tropical countries where collecting without permit is illegal and to get permit for private collection is impossible but they logging all the forests and don't care then for all live there. Makes me angry and sad at the same time .

Paul, yes it is easy to get a permit in Spain even for amateur entomologists. If you are not affiliated to any Insect Association, they ask you to affiliate to a Spanish association, but it is not difficult and not costful. They also ask you to send a report of which species you have seen and where.
An intelligent country ! Spend your money to go to Spain, France, Italy (and many other) instead of Greece, Turkey who don't respect us.
PS : the 2 Russians, including one of my friend, are safely back in Russia. They have been fined and cannot go to Turkey anymore. A team of famous French entomologists had the same problem 2 years ago. Both teams weren't in National Parks or other protected area. 4 years ago, a French tourist has spent few nights in jails, he had a shell that he had found on the beach in his bag... he wanted to bring back a souvenir to his daughter... what a stupid country (I talk about Turkish authorities of course).

I have never heard of collectors having trouble in Greece?

Nearly impossible to get a permit for foreigners. Some of my friends had trouble there. Material confiscated, been brought to the police station and so on.
I have heard that a Greek entomologist is denouncing every foreign team to the police.

I think I know who is that Greek freak entomologist as he sells P. apollo on ebay and he sent me some nice words last year as well and had to report him to ebay who took appropriate action.

No it is another Greek entomologist. The one I talk about is not a seller but a "scientist" who wants to describe himself all new discoveries and try to block all foreign teams.

ahhh wollastoni. Normally I find that when I travel alone I attract much less attention than when travelling with a group. I know that it is safer to be with someone else but people tend to ignore you more when you are alone. Collecting groups attract too much attention everywhere.
