An extraordinary collection of books on entomology are those by the great writer and British entomologist Philip Bertram Allan ( 1884- 1973. Although there is a wealth of information on their title subject moths, there are other brilliant essays on British butterflies and other entomological subjects. This is really enjoyable, witty and fun reading and Allans books are a far and welcome change from today's big coffee table scientific volumes with lavish colour reproductions. I do of course, enjoy the latter as well.
His entomological books in this vein are
A Moths-Hunter's Gossip. ( 1937, reprinted 1947 Watkins and Doncaster). Some wonderful moths tales here. My faves are the chapters ; Sugar and East Winds, Light with some Moralising, A Drawer Full of Rarities and Hawkmoth Visitors.
Talking of Moths. ( 1943 - reprinted in 1975 by E. W. Classey ). Among the contents is a great essay on the Kentish Buccaneers, the scammers of the 19th century and Indoor Collecting, which refers to the auction collectors and the chapter, Just Gossip.
Moths and Memories ( 1948 - Watkins and Doncaster.) Contents include the legendary tales Ghosts and Clossus, detailed essay on the extinct British Black-veined White and much more.
Leaves from a Moth Hunters Notebooks ( 1980, published from Allan's articles after his death by E.W. Classey ). Brilliant book, chapters include The Middle Copper, Mazarine Blue. Swallowtail mystery. The Oak Prominents and Larva hunting in Spring.
