Capri island is a wonderful little island between Naples and Sardinia. It is very famous for its jetset parties but the nature is also splendid there ! A very interesting vegetation with marine plants, forests and even some alpine plants on the small summit, the Monte Solare, altitude 600m.
I have spent few days there last week. It is too early in the season to judge but it looks also interesting for its butterflies.
Vanessa cardui was very common everywhere. They were migrating, fresh and very numerous. Hope many of them will reach Northern Europe soon. Pieris rapae and brassicae were common near the villages And on the Monte Solare summit, there is a big colony of Papilio machaon and Lassiomata megera. I have also seen a blue, it looked like Celastrina argiolus, but I didn't achieve to be close enough to be sure. Why ? Because hunting butterflies on the Monte Solare can be "very dangerous" ! This is how it looks :
One step on the left and you go directly from the Monte Solare, 600m, to the sea

I guess Capri island must be even richer in butterflies during summer. Charaxes jasius for example should be common there. Maybe also some Sardinian endemics ?
Anyone has been there during summer ? Anyone has a checklist of the butterflies from Capri ?
Hope you will like these pictures and that it will give you the will to discover Capri and its butterflies. Photo taken with Canon 600DMacro 100mm Canon

No
P. machaon is a common species and Italy is a respectful country for entomologists.

I've been there in July 2011. The most common species were G. cleopatra, H. fagi and H. neapolitana. The main drawback is that Capri is very very very expensive in Summer.

True, it is also expensive in April.
Is Hipparchia neapolitana really different from Hipparchia semele ?
