The Amazone Nature Lodge, a famous entomological lodge in French Guyana, is now sponsor of our forum. Have a look to their website if you want to organize a collecting trip there, they also have a very nice series of insect pictures from French Guyana Website : www.amazonenature.com/

The main problem from the United States is the flight to French Guyana. Last time I checked, the only US airport into F.G. was through Miami. Otherwise you have to travel to Paris first. Budget-wise, the largest expensive is the airfare.

There are also some flights between French Guadeloupe (West Indies) and French Guiana. Air France has a 3 hour flight between these 2 regions. Could be useful for US or Canadian travelers.
And when I discussed with Frédéric (the owner of the lodge), he told me most of his visitors are from the US and Japan (not from France).

Getting out on Guadeloupe looks indeed like it saves a lot of money. You can get there from Miami. I just checked and saw a return flight from Miami to Cayenne via Guadeloupe for less than $1000. The last direct flight to Cayenne I saw was $1800.

When I flew to French Guiana in 2004 flight from Miami to Cayenne cost about $1700 and it had three stops: Haiti, Guadalupe and Martinique It was rather like bus ride not a flight.

Paul : I am sure you can find some direct flights between North America and Guadeloupe. Last time I went to the Papuan mountains, I did : Paris - Kuala Lumpur KL - Bali Bali - Makassar Makassar- Jayapura Jayapura - Timika Timika - Wamena 6 flights to reach the final destination. And then one day of car to reach the good spots. But let's not complain, think about AS Meek or Wallace who took ships for months before reaching their collecting area !

Last March, we planned to invite an entomologist friend from Colombia to French Guiana. Looking for a Bogota / Cayenne flight, we only found very expensive routes via Miami and Guadeloupe. I thought you could certainly find it cheaper . Indeed, by proceeding in small jumps, we managed to divide by 3 or 4 the price of the trip. We have therefore booked the following flights (over two days!): Bogota to Leticia (colombian side) Leticia (Brazil side) to Manaus Manaus to Belem Belem in Cayenne We bought all the tickets from Paris. Unfortunately, the covid 19 came to destroy this beautiful program (unable to cross borders and Brazil, in this time of pandemic, was no longer a frequentable country!).
