The Click beetle family (Elateridae) has always been one of my favorites. Worldwide, they so far number over 9300 species; with 965 valid species present in the U.S. We have a few spectacularly "curious" species here such as our "Eyed elaters"; along with some measure of colorful species or those of a polished (gloss) black finish. In differing literature of old these beetles have been also affectionately called snapping beetles, spring beetles, or skipjacks !
These benign creatures are a joy simply put for any child to hold in hand; and almost always elicit a big smile or giggle when they upright themselves in the unique manner for which the family is known.
Here I have a specimen from my collection which hales from Arizona, Gila Co. It measures 31mm and is very cool for it's dark blue overall coloration with well defined "bold white" parallel sided markings. Also, the shininess and smoothness of the elytra are different from others in the same genus.
This particular species was named by a specialist author (Casey) in 1891. Casey must have had some admiration or affinity for Indian culture, tribes etc. because he named this one: Chalcolepidius apacheanus (Apache Click beetle)...
Well, for now I will take a respite from my beetle discussions for the day. To all those who read and appreciate these threads I surely hope that you have enjoyed our time together. I love talking about most things insect related. There is not a day that goes by in my life where I don't think about some kind of insect topic or the wonder of it...
I will keep on posting subjects that come to mind; as long as everyone continues to enjoy the wonders of the Insect world which I present.
