I have been out and about in different habitats, locations in southern England, and have not noticed any yet.

According to one the UK butterfly website, a number have been seen in Suffolk (east England) and elsewhere in the UK. Whether or not they are the front runners of a large immigration (we certainly had all sorts of different ones of those here) only time will tell. One interesting thing about Painted Ladies that I love, is once they had finished their business in the UK, the last generation all migrate back home. The wonders of nature.

I have only seen few of them this rainy and cold spring in Southern Ontario. Some years they are absent here. There was a large migration in Southern Alberta few days ago.

In the south of Ukraine and throughout the country a lot of Vanessa cardui. Massively appeared in mid-May, flew in droves from south to north. Now there are a lot of butterflies in any biotopes.

There was not that many in Algeria, Spain and South of France during spring. It seems this year migration is originating from Egypt/ West Levant and not from Morocco.

Indeed it seems that there have been an influx from the eastern Mediterranean/Asia minor region, rather than from Morocco via the Iberian peninsula. I recall seeing on weather reports that the far northwest of the Russian arctic reached about 30-31 degrees C back in early May. A few times since May, winds have blown in from south east towards Scandinavia. This seem to coincide well with radusho and Alexander reporting high numbers of this species too in their areas, spreading into Scandinavia. Most interesting! Jan Interesting to see how our small international forum helps us understand the origin and the path of that Vanessa cardui migration. Unfortunately, no migration here in France.

At least you have V.cardui there. We have almost nothing here in Ontario Canada. This is the worst spring I ever record here, rain and cold temperatures are every day.

After the last V. cardui mass migration in France (2009), I was impressed how "normal" the year 2010 was. Where were all the babies of that massive generation ? Parasitism is very efficient.
The boom of parasites following these invasion may even be dangerous for close species (Aglais...) ?

Since a couple of days, Vanessa cardui is very abundant around Aix-en-Provence (South of France). To-day (June, 19), at least 40 seen in 10 minutes in the garden near the village of Rognes !
