I highly recommend that none of you read the comments.
Thoughts on the video?

The video and all comments made me cry and feel very depressed.
I should add that not because of the butterflies but because of people who made this video and people made the comments. Made me realize how brainless are masses of followers and then the forest people with their higher knowledge of natural environment. They know how to harvest the forest they are not stupid as those followers.

Advocacy journalism in all it's 'glory'. It's a movie for their biased August story on butterfly collectors. I would simply ignore it, as already said it is nothing more than advocacy journalism. In the comments of the movie there is a lot of outrage, but also some people that do understand very well that these people rely on the butterfly trade.
What would interest me a lot more, and what has been itching me for the past few years is the 'felt' break down of butterfly trade in Europe and if any of this had an impact to these towns in Indonesia or if the possible rise of trade in China is making up for it.
I used to be one of the final dealers in this long string of people, would sell on insect fairs, but last year was probably one of my last insect fairs for a long time to come as visitor numbers have been so low that it's not worth anymore standing around a table for a whole day.

Frankfurt had always been the main fair I visited. Some other German fairs already got discontinued. Munich still exists, but it was a huge waste of time.

Not too sure why anybody would not want to read the comments in this thread??... and why anybody need to get upset by seeing this video, all it shows is some of the less well off people of this world trying to make a living out of natural resource that is plentiful. They are not the ones logging all the world's forests, so let National Geographic make a video about that. That would be more worthwhile.

But effect of this movie on mass followers is opposite: Stop killing poor butterflies and get other source of income and we all know what other industries are there: logging. And don’t forget the way National Geografic presented this movie to achieve their goal to make masses hate collecting insects. And they did it very successfully as you can read in comments. That huge entry gate to the farm with this collapsing butterfly what do you think should this represent. I only hope they will stop making videos like this the way they do. Paul

Peter, you have to open video on YouTube and scroll to the bottom, you will see all public comments Open YouTube and type in search window “Inside the Lives of Butterfly Traders”, if you use link here on this forum you will not see the comments.

Ah thanks, now I see, but what can you expect with today's bubbled wrapped phone generation. I would like to place some of those people into the poverty of those people shown in the video, I think after a while they might do a little butterfly catching themselves. National Geographic likes to play on the sentimentality of the public as they explain about the video " Step into the murky world of capturing and trading butterflies, where prices start at pennies and run into the thousands". The same people who make those comments drive cars, thus during their lifetime ending the life's of thousands of insects and think nothing of squatting a wasp or a fly, or cry blue murder if a wasp or hornet sets up a nest near their house but because butterflies are pretty insects it makes a difference, it upsets them.

This is my last comment on this nonesence. National Geografic should make the video to encourage public to support this trade and to create awareness how important is to save the habitat of the forest creatures, not only insects. They all do wrong way which we will all regret soon.

I’m done, gone to spread some beautiful moths.

It’s actually quite entertaining how easy it is already to influence public opinion with some sad music, some short video and almost no facts. Hilarious but also shocking! It reminds me a lot of the Nazi propaganda videos where they just mixed footage of animals pests, especially rats, with footage of stereotype Jews, so dumb, but it worked so well. Well, nothing changes in this world, people are dumb and will always be dumb. Let’s just enjoy our hobby as long as possible.

Im kinda happy insect collecting is not super popular because if most people in the world were into insect collecting, over harvesting would be a MUCH bigger problem. It’s very relaxing seeing that the beautiful insects flying around my house are ever abundant because everyone around me are too scared or disinterested to collect them except me. We almost have these insects to ourselves at this point. Over-harvesting of insects is a myth. Collectors don't have any pressure on insect populations and even if we were 100x more numerous, there would be no impact. Everyday, billions of insects are killed by spiders, birds, cars and so on. There population is not dependent to predation, insect collecting cannot have any impact. I would prefer there would be PLENTY of insect collectors : it would be great for insects as people would respect more their habitat and stop deforestation, stupid concrete urbanization, stupid pesticides and so on.
