Hello all,
I am a PhD student working on butterfly genomics. I am conducting a Europe wide study of Coenonympha tullia and therefore would like to request assistance in accessing samples.
If you are willing to help that would be fantastic!
I currently require samples of the butterfly from all over it's European range which includes, Finland, Norway, Germany, France, Switzerland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Belarus, Lithuania, Ukraine, Denmark, Austria, Czech Republic and others. I am situated in the UK so I can access my own samples for for the UK.
Dry specimens would be ok but stored in ethanol would be best, and if you are willing to send them to me I would be very grateful; and you would also be contributing to scientific research to conserve this species.
Please let me know if anyone is interested!
Thank you,
Melissa

Dear Melissa,
I am afraid it might be difficult to get recent European samples as the species in on red-listed.
Good luck, Best wishes, Xavier

Radusho is correct. C.tullia is not listed under any Annexes of Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC, so it is not protected by EU. As for Czech Republic and Slovakia it is not specifically protected ( as far as I know ), but in Czech is critically endangered ( www.lepidoptera.cz/motyli/okac-stribrooky-coenonympha-tullia-mueller-1764 ), in Slovakia very local ( www.lepidoptera.sk/coenonympha_tullia ). Problem is that all ( almost ) localities ( bogs ) where this species occurs are inside protected areas of various kinds ( Natura 2000, National Parks, Natural Reservations ) because bogs are very rare habitats in these two countries.

Dear All, Radovan is correct, however, C. tullia is legally protected in IR, FR, BE + SL(both disappeared), GE, RO and CH. I do assume the same in NL (due to SAP), DK... The Large Heath is not protected in UK (Melissa correct me if I am wrong) but under section 9, and there is a SAP in place. In addition in NL and CZ - as teinopalpus highlighted, the species only flies in protected areas (http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/full/174453/1). Although not protected here, most of the surviving colonies in England are in Nature reserves, therefore they are afforded quite a degree of protection but this is not the case in regions of Scotland. However, all UK tullia are protected from the sale of specimens by UK law.

Yes. Perhaps the BMNH might help, they must have a cabinet or two full of European tulla.

Hello Melissa,
Would june 2018 be too late for sending fresh specimens in alcohol? (otherwise I would be forced to send needled samples right away) They are from a military area in Central Germany (strong restrictions), where I am doing the monitoring and management. As they represent the very "last mohicans" between S- and N-German pops, I am quite interested in obtaining some ideas about their genetics. Drop me a Mail.
best wishes: Shawn
