When I first spread this specimen I figured I wouldn't have any trouble IDing it, and yet I haven't found a single image of a Bicyclus species featuring its blue spots (see HWs)... so help is needed. Caught 5/VII/2014 Nebobongo, Haut-Uele, DRC Thanks! Tom

I'm looking in Berger's "Les Papillons du Zaire", and it looks closest to B. italus. Not an exact match in shape nor verso spots, but I don't know the extent of variation. Berger does mention the blue spot in the male, however; I took a quick glance in D'Abrera and didn't see any mention of the latter.

I'm looking in Berger's "Les Papillons du Zaire" That's a book I'd like to find at a semi-reasonable price! Thank you for the lead!

It's not easy to find...especially at a semi-reasonable price! I looked for 4-5 years before I found one. Now that we know Michel, perhaps he could point you in the right direction

I read somewhere that most of the books that were printed somehow ended up within the DR Congo... it's such a fractured country now that I'm not sure many will ever resurface.

Yes Tom, Mobutu Sese Seko, president of Zaire, ask some specialist to write books on Zaire, such as Lippens on birds and Berger on butterflies ! These books were given to official visitors (Diplomats) and only a few copies have been distributed through the trade business. As this happened in Africa, books were immediatly stolen by the people working in the Presidency, and I know people from the other forum who obtained their copy like this ... My copy was offered to me by its author Lucien Berger who dedicate it for me at an evening dinner with his wife and Mr and Mrs Hecq, Euphaedra specialist and Lambillionea president for many years !

If I remember well, it was a very formal meal. I was about your age : 24 years old, I was wearing a suit, probably with a tie ... What I do remember, is that it was snowing that night in winter, and I had to drive back to my family friends under severe conditions !, but with my book safe with me ... Very good souvenirs indeed !

Could be Bicyclus golo (Aurivillius, 1893), male.

Could be Bicyclus golo (Aurivillius, 1893), male. Thanks for the suggestion! I'm not sure this is it either... though I wish I had a better command of Latin so that I could read Aurivillius' original description.
