Last April I traveled to Shang Hai for sightseeing, so I did not carry my net with me. but to my disappointment while visiting a temple I stumbled upon a garden loaded with Anthocharis scolymus, despite not having a net I managed to catch 4 specimens before being kicked out(for disturbing the peace). This coming April I would like to try my luck at catching some more, anybody happen to know any locations in or near Chongqing where I could collect some more? I'm not prepared to travel to Shang Hai again so the closer the better! Bellow are some links to the specimen I collected: i53.photobucket.com/albums/g49/18duroe/P8170679PB_zpsatxuqde5.jpgi53.photobucket.com/albums/g49/18duroe/P8170677PB_zps8xnp5krs.jpgAny advice is greatly appreciated! Hey Ed,how did you catch them without a net so that you disturbed the peace? I will be in Shanghai next April, so I could check out this garden. I have been to Chongqing several times and have some good Chinese friends there with connections to people in the adjacent valleys, will pm you.

Lovely little insects, all the orange tip family, I would imagine they are like our own anthocharis species, very wide spread along roadside verges, river banks etc where ever the foodplant can be found and sure to be found with loads of other Spring species.
luehdorfia, I would be interested to know if any of your Chinese friends have contacts for Stichophthalma from Shanghai and the south east, nominate howqua, fruhstorferi , also any contacts on Hainan island (3 species of Stichophthalma I'm looking to acquired rom there)

According to the Wikipedia entry at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthocharis_scolymus its "range is Eastern Asia (East China, Korea, Ussuri) where it is commonplace. Occasionally it is found in Japan." I suspect that A. scolymus probably does not occur in the Chongqing area, which is much further west. There is one species, A. bieti, in West Sichuan, so perhaps that species could get as far east as Chongqing. Adam.

Despite the area it looks like A. scolymus to me. www.euroleps.ch/seiten/g_fam.php?fam=pier#anthocharidiniI like Anthocharis, this genus, and Coenonympha are the only ones that I kept besides Lycaenidae. I have a few of the American species and hope to collect the Asian ones soon.

Despite the area it looks like A. scolymus to me. Yes, I am sure that it is as it was collected in Shanghai, but ED asked about collecting this species in Chongqing next year. Adam.

At the moment it is still horrible, although I speak Chinese really well, I think you have to meet some of these people personally and tell them that the exact data is really important - and not data like: Guangxi between 2010 and 2013, it makes me cry every time. I keep it in my mind and will send updates to ICF.

I know there's A scolymus near by in the beibei district, as I have a local lepidoptera book and it mentions it can be found in chongquing, beibei. The biggest problem is finding habitat suitable to support such butterflies as chongquing is very mountonus . The closest prarie/grassland I've come across has been in wulong and I've only caught Colias there(in October).
