24/VII/2016 Nebobongo, Haut-Uele (2°27'N, 27°38'E) 750m The verso has far more brown than any reference images of Tetrarhanis species that I've seen. My best guess is Tetrarhanis ilala, but that species' verso seems to have a much greater contrast between light and dark.

You are probably correct. Larsen illustrates this in his Butterflies of Kenya book but calls it T diversa ilala from Kakamega Forest in western Kenya. D’Abrera has it as T ilala subspecies etoumbi from “Congo Rep” and mentions a dark form of T diversa. The undersides throughout the whole genus are, to my mind, confusing. In any case a good interesting catch.

Larsen illustrates this in his Butterflies of Kenya book but calls it T diversa ilala from Kakamega Forest in western Kenya. What year was that published? William's states than in 2005 (I assume this is the West African book) Larsen separated diversa from ilala, diversa being the West African species. It seems we are agreed that Tetrarhanis ilala etoumbi is the best option.

Larsen's book "The Butterflies of Kenya" was published in 1991. The West African book was later. In my checklist I have T ilala (with two subspecies) and T diversa as separate species.

I just heard back from Steve Collins. He basically said this is another genus that is a mess and in need of revision.
