Charaxes are terrible culprits for this... absolutely terrible. My theory is that this is caused by pinched butterflies that have been placed in envelopes but are not quite dead.

You are probably right, although I suspect that abdominal muscles can still eject waste fluid even if the specimen has been injected in the thorax near the head, because insects have separate but connected nerve centres along the body. That is why a praying mantis male can still mate even though the female has already bitten off his head.
