Totally laughable, 320 extinctions since 1500 ( I presume that's the year not 3 o'clock this afternoon) since they had no idea just how many species there were in the world in the 1500's this can only be a guess, the fact that 10's of thousands have been descovered since then is not taken into account and the distribution of species is getting smaller because they are constantly being split into new species, each time reducing the range of the first, Papilio cressphontes for instance is no longer found in eastern U.S, doesn't mean it became extinct overnight, it suddenly became Papilio rumiko. Rich Rich, the article is not talking about insects. Your examples of Papilio have therefore nothing to do with the article, a vertebrate species is something much more uncommon than insects. It is 338 extinctions as a lower estimate since 1500, the regular estimate they give is 617. Furthermore it doesn't matter how many species there is or are known. If it is gone it is gone. If I had a $5 bill in my wallet that I have spilled coffee onto, which I could not find after checking in the front where I always kept the bill, then it would not matter how many other bills I additionally had in my wallet. Splitting of names will also not factor in, a dead Dodo is a dead Dodo. The full article is here, I don't know if everybody can access the page or not: advances.sciencemag.org/content/1/5/e1400253.full

I am working on it but it will take 2 or 3 years more of research. I have one working for Lycaenidae that gives the correct species in the top 10 (out of 400 possible species).

Here is my picture of Micropsyche that I could sneak away with. I have not found them yet in a museum so no close up.

I have collected Brephidium in Florida and received some in trades. Catching them is indeed somehow difficult as you first need to spot them. As I used to catch Microlepidoptera before I didn't have too much of a problem with this, but I just found 2 specimens in a place where should have been common. For the mounting, they do not pose any bigger problem than Microleps. I would also say that they can produce the smallest specimens but they are not the smallest species in general. The thing is that they have a large variation in possible wingspans.
Micropsyche ariana is indeed one of the smallest species there is. I have pictures of them from Frankfurt 2 years ago where a pair was for sale, unfortunately out of range of what I was willing to spend on a butterfly.
p.S. Brephidium also exist in Africa, I think they got introduced there by accident.

I am sorry that my reply comes kind of late, but I was not registered yet to this forum. The initial post displays so much misinformation that I just felt like I had to register.
I don't have to add too much to the general reply that one can give, cabintom and Jan have already stated it very well. The whole topic has no objective basis. There are multiple reasons for this. First of all the list of "dangerous" or "questionable" countries will constantly fluctuate as ethnic or political conflicts arise. Second the list of countries will be completely different depending on where you come from! Your list of countries for example just perfectly reflects the current list of Bogeyman nations issued by the US government. When I was in the McGuire Centre I found specimens out of North Korea from the 90's. I asked them how they got them and they explained me they came from some Polish guy, when they asked him how he made it to North Korea he explained that it was just a regular travel destination for them. Poland had been communist under the Soviet regime and therefore North Koreans like them. It always depends on your point of view or background.
You are giving a list of 14 countries, of these 14 countries I know people that went to, or collected in, 10 of them within the last 5 years! I do understand that you only had good intentions about starting the topic but it would be good if you would form a proper opinion about some of these countries. Speaking about "rebel" issues in Sri Lanka is so out-of date and somewhat ridiculing the Tamil conflict in northern Sri Lanka (yet again, I know plenty of people from there. I do not agree with their war, but that is how ethnic clashes sometimes end up.). Vietnam is just a regular holiday destination where plenty of people visit and I won't start discussing about Iran now because that will just take too much to write down.
