DNA studies have not yet been made on these, but the most conclusive identification is by genitalia preparation. It may be possible to distinguish your specimen on appearance, but the paper said that while most can be separated by subtle differences in pattern some specimens look intermediate, but genitalia are clearly one or the other species.

I have not seen the Kivu area subspecies which might give a further clue to variability across the region. Back to Iolaus (Tanuetheira) timon congoensis for a moment. Here's a couple more specimens freshly off the boards: Both are ex. Robert Ducarme from Mbau, Nord Kivu, caught near the end of August 2015. I find the size and colour difference of the bottom specimen curious. EDIT: I just took a look at the actual specimens again. The blue is actually nearer than this picture suggests, and depending on the angle both specimens express the blue of the bottom specimen through to the green of the top.

A few Epitola I received from Robert Ducarme: Epitola urania Kirby, 1887 ♀ 19/IX/2016 Mbau, Nord Kivu Epitola uranoides uranoides Libert, 1999 ♂ 26/VIII/2015 Mbau, Nord Kivu Epitola uranoides uranoides Libert, 1999 ♀ 25/VII/2015 Mbau, Nord Kivu There's not going to be much new material coming out of Mbau any time soon. It's currently in the middle of rebel occupied territory...

Wow Super specimens Dave, about the best series of perfect specimens of Kallima (Mallika) jacksoni I have yet seen. Unfortunetely, I didn't take the picture but it was a complete box used for decoration and only jacksoni inside (probably 15 or more) in a personal collection ...

This box is of a group of Lycaenidae that is very seldom seen. The Mimacraea really do live up to their name and have proved to be an interesting and varied group to obtain and study. The first column, however, is a related genus Cooksonia.

The drawer of Mimacraea is quite attractive, thanks for sharing. It look like you have a pupa case as well, or is it a pre-pupal (I guess that's how you would say it) skin shed? Let's hope it's not a giant dermastid, the BMNH might have to up their security

Yes, it is in fact the empty pupal case after the adult emerged.

I,ve got those two specimens 30 years ago yet back in Poland. I would be glad if someone can properly identify them for me as there are few similar looking species. No data at all. Thank you Paul
