That said, the act of collecting butterflies is more interesting than looking at photos of them. The ability to get children outside, to collect something tangible (whether rocks or bugs), is undervalued in our society. If we could get more kids outside how would that impact ADD? If we could get more working parents outside, how would that impact healthcare cost and professional performance?
Sadly, butterfly collecting used to be a noble profession and hobby- even of interest to the general public. Now we have video games to occupy the kids and baseball the adults.
I wonder- if half the USFWS employees were tasked with generating dialog with and interest in the environment to the general public, would it not have a measurable impact on society's happiness, health, and family dynamics?
