I am going to Koh Samui the first week of April for a family vacation, but would like to do some collecting while there. Can anyone offer any advice on where to go and what to expect? Interested in butterflies during the day and light trapping for moths/beetles at night.

You will find all information you need (species, localities and so on) on my friend Les Day's website : www.samuibutterflies.com/home/I have been to Samui one time. Many nice spots even if too many tourists for me.

Just going there today , only for one day though. I am planning to visit couple of waterfalls. I will post if something interesting.
Samuibutterflies.com is a great website indeed what and when you can find there however it doesn't say where are a good locations on the island to collect. Also in my opinion the data from Koh Pha Ngan is incomplete as I have found many species on Koh Tao which are occurring on Samui but not on Pha Ngan according to web which is located half way between.

Drop an email to Les Day, I am sure he will indicate you the best spots of the island.

I have visited Koh Samui one more time and stayed here for six days. I must say that insect activity is much lower then end of January and begin of February when I was here for one day. Similar sitiuation on Koh Tao. The best collecting time was December and January just right at the end of rain season. However deep in the forest there are still many species flying around. For example I have found a good number of Papilio palinurus and Atrophaneura varuna varuna.

Paul, that is unfortunate to hear. Regardless, I am willing to bet there is still much greater activity than here in Abu Dhabi. Do you have any recommended locations or other advice? Did you do any light trapping at night, and if so, how was it? I am coming there a week from Friday and looking forward to it.

Did you do any light trapping at night, and if so, how was it? I am coming there a week from Friday and looking forward to it. I did not do light trap collecting as I have not drag all the necessary equipment with me there ( generator too heavy ) and my wife would not agree to that anyway ( too many bar girls there ). I did try night collecting on Koh Tao, but it wasn't deep in the forest ( garden of my house, still many greenery around ). None of the larger moths came to the light though. I have install also bait trap near one of the streams on Samui for two days but only 3 noctuid moths I found in there. Hin Lad Waterfall, Wangsaothong Waterfall and along the road from Lamai Beach to Mae Nam. I have only collected there for 3 days but the Hin Lad location is so far the best I found. I will be back there next year for two months in December and January right after the rain season when butterflies should be more abundant. For moth collecting I think best season is at the begin of rain season. Good luck there Paul PS. Let us know what you will find there
