I like spreading butterflies in the Sunday morning. I always rehydrate leps during the Saturday night so that I can spend one hour of my Sunday morning spreading them. It is a relaxing routine while my little boy is watching cartoon and my wife still at bed.
On this board, a rare Delias paoaiensis from North Luzon and a pair of the huge Delias kuehni sulana from Taliabu island.
And you, what is on your spreading boards ?

and Olivier what a great job you make of them too and only in one hour. I like you tiny groove on your setting boards, where did you obtain these, on most British boards they are larger. Some nice Delias there, I believe a subviridis from Ceram as well. Congrats on obtaining the D. paoaiensis.

Recently, I've been forced to stop spreading for a while because all of my spreading boards are full. It's not a bad problem, and it's forced me to start building new storage boxes for my collection... but I really would like to spread the specimens I got in Beni, and not having any room is discouraging me from going out hunting.

Jan < yes I guess Mt Paoay is the type locality. My specimen was caught last August by a team of Japanese collectors in Mayoyao, Ifugao, North Luzon Yagishita caught one female in January 1989 in "Banaue, North Luzon" I let you check if these localities are close from Mt Paoay but it would make sense
As it is rare in collection, I guess Delias paoaiensis is a canopy species, so easy to miss.
Peter < thanks. Yes there is a subviridis too. I bought my spreading board to Cahurel entomology from my friend Alex. They have an adjustable groove, so I can spread both Lycaenidae and Ornithoptera on it.

Wow, I could never manage doing six specimens in an hour. If I relax specimens the day or two before; I usually do two within an hour (comfortably). Maybe 50 min. If I have just come back from the field and start right away I get 3 done in an hour (averaging 20 min. each). I've always found spreading a relaxing task but, always tedious.... I am always (probably) over concerned about the symmetry of the specimen as well as marring the specimen myself. This is why my local collecting efforts of an hour or two in the field usually only result in coming back with maybe 10 or 15 items.

1200 m seems to me a good altitude for Delias paoaiensis. This species belongs to the georgina group and those species usually fly between 700 and 1500m.

D. paoaiensis doesn't seem to have been available recently; anyway, I've not seen it on price lists. I have just two males and a female (see column 6 in this photo), all fairly old now. The first male and the female are simply marked "North Luzon" with dates in 1989-1990; the second male has better data (Banaue, Ifugao, N. Luzon; 25 August 1989) and was captured by the well-known collector Justin Nuyda. delias drawer02 1095 by D B, on Flickr

D. paoaiensis doesn't seem to have been available recently True, but my male was caught last summer Danny. So some people still know where and how to catch it.
Who is this famous "Justin Nuyda" ?

Relaxing while spreading Delias today !
On this board, a rare Delias mesoblema from Central Mountains of West Papua (first for my collection), some nice forms on Delias stresemanni from Ceram (including a male form not described by Talbot and a biform female, it will deserve a specific topic when off the board) and a female Delias kenricki from Arfak Mountains
