Dear viewers, i am a 19 year old chemistry student with entomology as hobby. i bought a lot of beetles from a seller. all should be (i am not 100% sure if this is true) collected in Tam Dao. and i strugle with the identification of the prosopocoilus species. i think most are subspecies and variations of those of Prosopocoilus astacoidus. some photos will follow: (sorry it are links to instagram photos because i wasn't able to upload photos from my ipad to this forum) Photo 1

Thanks a lot to anyone who can help me. useful links up to direct id both will be of great help. i don't have the right books for this job and on internet i didn't find enough information about the subspecies and their variation. Also are different sources very confusing towards eachother. for those who are interested i have a lot of these which are too many for my collection which i can trade or sell. but for now id is most important to me. again thanks a lot for anyone that can help me. greetings, Sven

A friend of Insecterra told me that they are Prosopocoilus (Metopodontus) astacoides ssp. blanchardi Parry, 1873

Thank you! I am very glad with the reply. I am amazed by how much variation there can be in one subspecies then .

A friend of Insecterra told me that they are Prosopocoilus (Metopodontus) astacoides ssp. blanchardi Parry, 1873 ? I thought blanchardi was the Taiwanese subspecies of astacoides. You might want to verify...otherwise i can look it up.

I also found that blanchardi comes from Taiwan. I also don't know how reliable the seller was with his collection data because he gave one broad location and month where the specimens would be collected and it was quite a lot of beetles. For some of the specimens I can really see the similarities with blanchardi. For now they are in my collection as astacoides ssp.
