Dave, very nice selection of Stichophthalma specimens. How many species are there and how many recognized subspecies. I expect you nearly have them all.

Sadly Peter I don't have them all...not sure how many species/sub speces in all . I think a few have been discovered quite recently in Viet Nam. There is a great site for this genus put together by another member of this forum-here's the link:

I don't think those in the know really know, or at least can't agree on how many, there is so much variation within one location.
Thanks for the plug Dave.

There are 2 ssp of uemurai: nominate from S. Vietnam (TL Bao Loc, Lam Dong) and u. gialaii from C. Vietnam (TL Gia Lai Prov.). Are you guys seeing them from more than one location?

Yes there are 2 uemurai, nominate and gailai, I took nomads question to be how many Stichophthalma species and sub species rather than about just uemurai, there are some who have split sub species from species, for instance Stichophthalma howqua suffusa is regarded by some as Stichophthalma suffusa with Stichophthalma howqua tonkiniana now regarded as Stichophthalma suffusa tonkiniana. eamsei and mathilda are regarded by some as species rather than sub species of louisa.
There is a new paper due later this year, hopefully someone has studied these a little further at DNA level and can answer these queries.
fruhstorferi was considered a sub species of louisa years ago, personally I think it belongs with uemurai, cambodia and godfreyi, superficially at least they share some visual characteristics, especially on the recto surface, ranging from a light brown colouration in North vietnam getting bluer as it nears uemurai localities in the south and then through cambodia ranges to south Thailand where godfreyi flies. The verso surface are very similar, even sharing a characteristic little black streak in the hindwing cell area.
Rich. ( I stress I'm no expert, just a confused collector)

Those are 2 beautiful cases daveuk ! ! Love em'. Top shelf quality to boot. On a curious note I was wondering daveuk if you "cherry-pick" your specimens at various European insect fairs OR do you get your material papered and have just been very lucky in getting such ex-pupa examples? Since most or all of these lovelies are wild caught many do have minor yet sometimes bothersome issues with their wings. Your material is awesome. A friend of mine orders 8 to 10 of em' at a pop just to wind up with 3 or 4 he's really happy with. But, his system works and just like your examples his "keepers" are just breathtaking...

The quality is getting better from the sellers in Vietnam but you do have to "cherry pick" for sure and obviously the prices of these specimens goes up, Daves specimens are of excellent quality, well set and expertly photographed. All are wild collected in bait traps and as they are very large they are easily damaged.

Hi Trehopr Thanks for your comments. I think Rich replied for me to you !! I buy all my Stichophthalma papered & Rich is also quite right-the quality does seem to be improving. Particularly as far as Viet-Nam is concerned. I do "cherry-pick" but also get lucky quite a lot thankfully ! Dave

There are 2 ssp of uemurai: nominate from S. Vietnam (TL Bao Loc, Lam Dong) and u. gialaii from C. Vietnam (TL Gia Lai Prov.). Are you guys seeing them from more than one location? Just off the boards, the top specimen from Binh Thuan province, south of Lam Dong province where nominate uemurai was descovered, has a forewing length of just 50mm, though this is the smallest of nine males that range from 50mm to 55mm forewing length, nominate uemurai males are 55-60mm whilst s.sp gailai are 61-63mm, they are also coming from a much lower altitude 200-700m ( mainly 300-500m ). The other males will be on the website soon. Rich
