Dear All,
Can anyone confirm the subspecies of G. cleopatra from Corfu (ssp. citrina?) and Malta?
Many thanks in advance,
Simon

Hi Simon, Welcome to the Forum This is what funet.fi gives : -G. c. cleopatra Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia -G. c. europaea Verity, 1913² cleopatra europaea Verity, 1913² , TL: Florence -G. c. ssp.[?] Gonepteryx cleopatra ssp.[?] ; Winhard, 2000, Butterflies of the world 10 : 12, pl. 14, f. 2-3 (Olymbos, Pantadaktylos, Cyprus) -G. c. palmae Stamm, 1963² Canary Islands cleopatra palmae Stamm, 1963² , TL: Canary Islands, La Palma -G. c. petronella de Freina, 1977 Gonepteryx cleopatra petronella de Freina, 1977 Atalanta 8: (270-278) Malta and Corfu are not said to have a distinct ssp. Jonathan ( satyrinae on this forum) may tell us more about the population from Malta as he lives there.

Dear both,
Thank you for your assistance although I have to admit I'm still as confused as I was! I've now seen references to between four and ten subspecies. Certainly, my specimens from Malta and Corfu look different to anything else I've got...those from Malta being consistently smaller and paler than specimens from elsewhere while the males I have from Corfu have a lot more orange on the forewings...
I suppose ultimately it depends on how much I want to either "lump" or "split" specimens in my cabinets but I'd still be interested to hear anyone else's views...
Simon

In my opinion the Maltese population is similar to that of Italy. I have specimens from Corfu and yes the specimens have a slightly darker orange and are larger from what we have in Malta. In Malta, the brightness of the orange on the males forewings depend on the season for example if it is wet or warm. I can upload a photo of the Maltese specimens I have in my collection to show you the different hues in the males forewings if you want to.
Best Regards Jonathan www.satyrinae.yolasite.com/
