Better to have a less than perfect specimen than none at all. How rare is this species Dave, any news on its status today.

Not sure at all about the current status of this one Peter..it's listed as rare where I have read about it. I have never seen it offered for sale. I got my specimen in a mixed box from Kempton show a few years ago.

Lovely Dave, one I don't have, the fun you get at insect fairs in searching out stuff, you can find all sorts of things, I remember finding a box full of cethosia nietneri a couple of years ago, males and females, the guy "just wanted rid of them", I happily obliged, try finding those for sale now, almost impossible.

Very nice Dave, one I don't have. Have you seen stichophthalma nurinissa ?, there is a link to it one my website links page, very similar to nourmahal but with a lighter boarder, also the stichophthalma neumogeni renqingduojiei from Tibet (picture to the left) have very similar undersides, these three look related, getting lighter as they go north/higher into the Himalayas. What is the (approx) wingspan on your nourmahal, Dave.

This is just off the boards, and I have to say I'm more than a little excited by it, I've put it in this thread because to me the underside of this screams Stichophthalma nourmahal yet it is from Vietnam though apparently not Sa Pa as previously thought but from Hoang Lien N.P, Than Uyen district, Lai Chau province, Vietnam 1,700m, May 2015. I can find no record of nourmahal coming from Vietnam but it does fly on Hainan Island off the coast of China. Take a look at the links page on my website below there is a link which shows a picture of Stichophthalma from Hainan Island, it looks very similar to the figured Stichophthalma nourmahal s.sp chuni. If it flies on Hainan and North India it's possible it occurs between these areas.. Forewing length is 48mm Rich

Lovely specimen Rich. I think I missed out on one similar to it at the weekend. The underside certainly looks a lot like S nourmahal . Dave

Outstanding specimen timmsyrj ! Simply outstanding. Bravo on that find ! I have to hand it to both you and daveuk for really opening my eyes to the wonder that is Stichopthalma. Never in any book have I ever seen so much "fine stuff" as the material that both of you have posted on this forum over the last year. What grand butterflies the "jungle queen" group are. Thanks so much to both of you and keep up the good work !

Dave That wasn't me last weekend but it was me that won the one this morning so apologies if you bid on it, it looked to me a little larger and lighter so i'm hoping its a female, I've missed a few by the look of it as he's not been listing some as Stichophthalma and my searches haven't picked them up. Many thanks trehopr1, there are some stunning Stichophthalma around at the moment and i ( and probably Dave ) am spoilt for choice, there are also more sellers with them so the choice is better, Thanh is mostly central Vietnam specimens, Dang is in Bao Loc so gets southern stuff mainly and insectstore, dorcusvietnam and vonhongt have more northern specimens of Vietnam, sadly not much coming from China apart from suffusa and neumogeni, never seen nominate howqua from East China or suffusa miyana or fruhstorferi from the south. There's always specimens coming out of Thailand despite them being protected there, but never any true siamensis from the south east where they occur with cambodia which is offered nor any ranohngensis from the south west but godfreyi is offered, maybe one day, hopefully..
