The Caliper beetle (Golofa porteri) is surely one of the most eccentric looking beetles amongst Coleoptera. Found primarily in Columbia this species is well known to beetle enthusiasts. And though it may be considered common this "oddity" even amongst other horned beetles stands tall and up front for its appearance. Well developed males whose horns are of equal length (or better) are much desired by collectors. Their prothoratic horn may stand so tall above them that a deeper drawer (other than standard) may be required for safe placement. These benign creatures like others of their clan prefer sap flows or rotting fruit for sustenance. A simple "delight" in any beetle collection and a question provoking item for the curious at large...

Great memories. As kids we dreamed of porteri and pizzaro, and when finally my friend got a porteri I was amazed.
