Thanks to one of my friend on my "Entomological Books" page on Facebook, I was informed on a new book about Comoros butterflies that can be ordered there : www.pensoft.net/product.php?p=13011&SESID=a64b3c8eddf54d82e69004cf1361e67aI received my copy this morning. It is written by Emilio Balletto, Francesca Barbero, Luca Casacci, Hamada Chakira, Abdillah Dafiné, Ahmed Ouledi Title : Les papillons des iles Comores - The butterflies of the Comoros Pensoft, 2015, 286 pp., 40 color plates, large format, glossy paper, hardback cover. Written in both french and english language, it is the first major book on Comoros butterflies and well illustrated after revisional notes by Bernard Turlin published in Lambillionea between 1993 and 1996 (alltogether 10 articles on Rhopalocera and Heterocera) I am not a Comores expert but authors did not examined Steve Collins collection at ABRI as he extensively collected in Comoros islands, and therefore did not know much about the status of Graphium levassori for instance ? They have not observed it and even think or suggest it may be extinct ! Only the male is figured ... In fact early stages are known by some of us and breeding has been almost done on this species if I am correct ? A+, Michel

A+, Michel Well, I have seen photos of the egg and larva and the foodplant has been identified, but maybe it's supposed to be a secret until publication so perhaps we shouldn't discuss it here too much and I won't add anything more just now. I can say that it is certainly not extinct. Adam.

How come some people can write a book about African leps without asking ABRI some info... Did they contact Turlin ? Does not seem very serious to me.
G. levassori is not extinct at all.

The work of Turlin has certainly been studied, at least the authors says it is a great work ! But it does not seem they have been in contact with him as Bernard is not mentioned in the "acknowledgments" ? For the rest, it would be better if one of the authors would let us know their thoughts about this book ? Any of them reading us A+, Michel

"but it is very true to say that some people are not easy to work or discuss with ..." A+, Michel you are right Michel ! Image and reality are not always the same. Often in life, the one that holds the handle that is right, and to know how to speak is helpful.

I discussed yesterday with Bernard - he was really crossed about this book, having not been informed of such a publication. He also does not the authors although the some a quite well known, may not for for the 'Comores' fauna...
I gave Bernard a print-out of the current topic along with the Forum name. I hope we can count a new member soon.
Best wishes, Xavier
