Splendid material radusho.... Absolutely awesome ! Can't help but say I'm envious of such a find like that. You've got to just love the care, thoughtfulness, and appreciation for LIFE that went into those boxes. Bravo.....

Whomever prepared up those larvae was VERY GOOD at it because they did several boxes like that and maybe more ! The time honored techniques employed varied a little depending on what older lepidopterist you talk with. And the thing is that even if you were quite good at it you may at BEST only realize a percentage of success in the 70% range. So you would almost certainly have to prepare several larvae up just to wind up with 2 or 3 really good ones. Trial and error along with re-adapting to errors eventually made some collectors an ARTIST of a sort. The methodology has largely been lost to time and lack of any tangible written notes(methods). I heard back in the 1990's some people were going to try freeze drying larvae. However, I've never heard if that technique ever met with much success. Nomad has posted a couple of larval photo's from I believe Juvisy or Entomodena. So someone out their in Europe still knows their STUFF or has at least re-invented it. The specimens looked quite good. I would have bought them on a heartbeat.......

I heard back in the 1990's some people were going to try freeze drying larvae. However, I've never heard if that technique ever met with much success. N We had a small discussion about it on entomologenportal.net It was possible to do it but the costs would be rather high. We got an offer of 50 euro for euch catepillar. THey said most colours wouldn't be as nice as before so they should be coloured. This was the result of 1 test catepillar they made. greets jens
