I'm not sure how many of you are from southern California, but seeing the Vanessa cardui migration last week en mass was the first butterfly migration I have seen/noticed, and I have lived here my whole life! Seeing hundreds fly by me on campus was cool. Anyone else have migration stories to share?

It is always nice to see Migration in action, and Vanessa cardui is a very powerful flyer that can cover very long distances. A distant memory was when I was a wee lad, is sitting on the beach after collecting butterflies on the undercliff at Lulworth Cove, Dorset, England and watching a steady progression of what I knew then as Large and Small or Cabbage Whites, Pieris brassicae and rapae coming from the sea =English Channel.

About 10/15 years ago, there was a Vanessa cardui massive migration in Western Europe too. It happens every 20/30 years.
I met it in Brittany and it was very impressive with one cardui every meter.... millions of them !
