I'm wondering if any collectors or enthusiasts of moths living on one of the Eastern seaboard states could tell me about the status of the Ailanthus Silkmoth / Cynthia Moth (Samia cynthia). Of all the various species of Saturniidae found on the Eastern 1/2 of the U.S; the Cynthia moth seems to get little to no mention --- ever ! Peterson's field guide to Eastern North American moths (2012) offers nothing about it whatsoever. Not even a mention in passing ! On the other forum all anyone ever talks about regarding cocoons is finding Polyphemus, Cecropia, Promethea, and an occasional Tulip- tree Silkmoth. The species was said to be prevalent in the New York / New Jersey / Boston region so I would think it should still be there unless there has been a precipitous decline in the species for some reason. The cocoons are easy to spot (just like Promethea); yet why does it seem no one ever offers them for sale? It's a really great introduced species and I'd like to know more about it's whereabouts here.
