I saw my last butterflies in the UK in October. During a walk yesterday in a large forest during the last day of 2018 I spotted two species of winter moths of the family Geometridae that were resting on the shady sides of beech trunks. Several Mottled Umber Erannis defoliaria Clerck, 1759 were seen, which is on the wing from October until December and is certainly coming to the end of its flight period now. The aptly named Winter Moth Operophtera brumata Linnaeus, 1758 was also found. Both are common species and have females that are flightless that also sit about on tree trunks but these were not seen. Mottled Umber Erannis defoliaria.
Winter Moth Operophtera brumata.
