I find this species just stunning ! I only recently acquired it from a dealer in Poland. It is a breeder specimen which is why it is flawless. Cannot imagine trying to collect one of these in good shape (as a wild capture). Outstanding prep work by the seller. Have read it is endemic to the Philippines.

The various islands of the Philippines have different subspecies which are mainly distinct in the females. Here are some examples of the females from my collection: melanotus (Staudinger, 1889) (Type locality: Palawan) albofasciata (Semper, 1892) (Type locality: Mindoro) semperi (C. Felder & R. Felder, 1861) (Type locality: Luzon) sorsogona Page & Treadaway, 1996 (Type locality: Sorsogon, nr Bulusan, S. Luzon) baglantis (Rothschild, 1908) (Type locality: Negros) imogene Schröder & Treadaway, 1979 (Type locality: Sibuyan) lizae Schröder & Treadaway, 1984 (Type locality: Mt. Balog, Antique, Panay) supernotatus (Rothschild, 1895) (Type locality: Bohol) aphthonia (Rothschild, 1908) (Type locality: Mindanao) justini Page & Treadaway, 2003 (Type locality: Near Milagros, Masbate) PS. I don't have examples of all the subspecies.

I'll add a couple of photos that I happen to have on the hard drive: one of my semperi drawers, and a closeup of a female s. imogene (also visible on the drawer photo; I've just noticed that its label is printed incorrectly). Danny,
Do you have ssp. baglantis? I don't have any specimens of that or the newer ssp. not pictured above.
Adam.

Danny, Do you have ssp. baglantis? I don't have any specimens of that or the newer ssp. not pictured above. Adam. Yes, there are two pairs in the right column of the drawer photo. I meant to send you photos of them previously, but most likely forgot. I have another drawer of set specimens, but need to photograph it. Checking my list, I see that I don't have sorsogona, justini, nor male imogene.

Ah yes, of course there are. Strangely I cannot enlarge the photo, if I open it in Flickr the enlarger does not function, and the photo is even smaller than above. Your imogene is superb. Interestingly ssp. albofasciata is very variable, one even has some red in the pale forewing discal streaks (bottom right), but note that the hindwing margins are not connected by pale scales, unlike some other subspecies. Here's a picture of my draw of albofasciata: Why is the pair of A. aidoneus in this draw? That species belongs with the priapus group. Note the inside of the abdominal fold has a pink edge: Adam.

That's a lovely series of albofasciata!
A. aidoneus is present for a very mundane reason: there was no space for them in the priapus drawer, and rather than creating a new drawer just for them, it was more efficient to place them in a semperi drawer for the time being.

I see, good reason. I have 3 draws of aidoneus as it is a "local" species in SE Asia: NE India, Burma, Yunnan, Indochina. Interestingly there is no difference across its range. Adam.

Recently I acquired a splendid pair of this species from another collection. These are such wonderful large butterflies with quite variable females...

Very nice. I recognize Craig Bolles' handwritten labels immediately.

Additionally, I was fortunate to find yet another subspecies present in the collection. Hence, I could not resist having another different one for my collection...
