Hello! the following moth was found mid-day in the north-western suburbs of Victoria, Australia. Some details include: - 3.5cm (1.5") - White hair - Black head with red on the center frontal viewside view

Thanks for adding those pics. That helps a lot indeed. Its a species of Tussock moth, know scientific as the Lymantriidae family. I believe it must be something like the Genus Euproctis (scroll down the page a bit) or something close to that. I believe that your specimen had the fine hair on its upperside of the thorax rubbed off and thus expose the redish skin. For Australian moths the CSIRO website is good place to start - if you have a clue of what you are looking for and thus know where to begin!
