There is a very rare but large spectacular hoverfly, Callicera aurata that I would love to photograph. This species has a golden body and unusually large porrect white tipped antennae. Sightings are few in the UK, mostly around woodland and Heathland in the south of England but it has turned up in bizarre places. Over the past two days, I have been looking up images and records of this species but it does not seem to occur regularly in one place and the books tell you its one of the hardest species to find. Today, I was standing in my small garden when to my left I heard a loud buzzing and there sitting on a leaf was a large female Callicera aurata in perfect condition. I had a good but quick look, then rushed indoors for my camera, upstairs and downstairs I ran, but yes you have guessed it, the beauty was gone, so no Wilts recorded proof. My folded net was nearer, I should have gone for that. A very Surreal Hoverfly moment, a Callicera aurata landing in my garden when I had just been reading about such a rarity, it must be a million to one chance, now why can I not win the lottery.
