Hello everybody, I am Svetozar from Bulgaria and just joined your forum. It’s a pleasure for me to present my entomology collection: Part#1Part#2Part#3Part#4Part#6Part#7The insects were collected in Bulgaria 1976 – 1989 year as a family hobby. In short - there are almost all resident butterflies, some moths and other insects. Mine and my father’s wish is to donate part of collection (for example Part#1) to a museum so that more people can see it. I would like to hear your opinions or comments about our collection. Also any ideas or suggestions will be highly appreciated. Thank you

Hey Svetozar, welcome to our forum and thanks a lot for sharing your collection with us! You have an amazing collection there, very well displayed and organised. I also really love it how you always display both sides of the butterflies, it truly would be valuable addition for any museum I think.
So did you stop collecting in 1989? It seems it was a really nice family hobby. Thanks again for sharing these photos with us, it's a delight to look at them!

It's nice to hear high words from real experts. Thank you for the replies! Yes, we stopped collecting in 1989 but the story is too long to tell.

sve it must be an interesting reason to stop collecting after assembling such a nice collection. We love long stories here in our forum, if you want we would be happy hear it. So you aren't collecting anything at all?

Hello sve Welcome to the forum. Your setup and display are absolutely brilliant. Well done. It is a pity that you stopped collecting. Just in case you would like to fine tune the name of the Satyrinae species, I suggest that you visit my website: www.satyrinae.yolasite.com/Museums would love to have a well organized collection. I suggest that you talk to the local Museum curators of the country you currently live in even though you will arouse the major interest from Bulgarian curators. Just be careful how to handle the apollo species since it is protected by CITES. Jonathan

So you aren't collecting anything at all? The reason is not interesting, but rather trivial. When we started collecting, I was a boy and my father was a mentor of the occupation. We did everything together and spend really nice time. After 1989 the family began to expand and interests to change. (Not related to the “revolution”) :-) At present the insect collection is one of the many activities that have made me happy.

Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for the evaluation and suggestions. I visited your web site and read about the taxonomy and systematics of the subfamily. Tell me please, what you mean “to fine tune the name of the Satyrinae species” ?
Appropriate note about apollo species. I do not plan to export.

Marvelous collection indeed ! A very thorough and comprehensive showing of the insect fauna present in Bulgaria. I cannot imagine there are many private collections so extensive in locally collected fauna. Simply impressive throughout. All nicely identified and well prepared. Love the presentation (each individual is separated just enough from the next to exhibit individuality). I too follow this idea with my own collection. If this were my collection I would'nt be in any too big a hurry to donate any of it. You have 13 years involved in amassing it, thousands of hours preparing up the material, and countless memories to go with it. You still have many more years of personal enjoyment in keeping it and only really give it up when you truely feel you cannot care for it or that it may suffer damage due to neglect. Few people except true collectors with the PASSION will ever care for it the same as you. This could be also said for most institutions which generally lack storage space, staff to attend to it, and PROPER lighting if they ever do display any of it. Maybe, over the coming years you could acquaint yourself with some of the museums and staff present in Bulgaria and you will come to figure out who is best suited to really care for it. You may also want to consider asking if the collection can be kept togather as a separate entity from any general collection as it represents a dedicated family effort.

Thank you trehopr1!
A notably meaningful and complete reply. I am impressed by your concern and attention.
When we were considering the idea of donation, we had exactly the same cogitations. After reading your post, my doubts are even greater. My father and I are currently negotiating with a Bulgarian museum, where we were offered a separate room for the collection. They are developing a reconstruction project but nothing has been done yet. Overall the idea seem good - the museum is intended mainly to present the Bulgarian fauna and this is going to be the only entomological collection there. The shortcoming - the museum is in a small provincial town. On the other side, all other Bulgarian museums are truly overwhelmed and cannot offer a separate exhibition.
