How more stupid and foolish could anybody be, this was just trophy collecting, it was a protected butterfly, Flying in a nature reserve with lots of photographers about. Why put yourself to all that hassle. Pay the money, buy yourself a nice old British Large Blue with good data from someone who has a special license. This was just the mentality of a egg-collector, like the person who will go to any lengths to steal rare bird's-eggs.

RULES AND REGULATIONS are killing entomology, that is by and large what they are there for, so that we know our place, we are now SO concerned with them that we dare not move, always looking over our shoulder, all the enjoyment of a harmless pass time being eroded away so that it stops, THIS is the intention of the powers that be, to enforce their will upon those who oppose their twisted agenda's and it's working.
I repeat stupid yes, but the following hysteria tells you all you need to know about exactly WHO is running the asylum.
And don't be under any illusions gentlemen, there are spies amongst us, be VERY careful what you post and where you post it, eyes are upon you.

Then take the power.
In France, collecting was forbidden in the whole Alpes de Haute Provence, this ban has been cancelled in the years 2000s. Why ? Because entomologist associations did their job.
Duncan < one doesn't have to be careful about what he "posted" as you say... one must respect the laws. You don't like the laws ? Make them change ! + I am not a specialist of the UK laws, but AFAIK collecting is legal... so it is not a problem of laws as you are saying. It is a problem of "image", of education and fighting the anti-science movement with the right weapons.
Law is an issue in India, Brazil, Indonesia... but not in the UK, AFAIK.

I will not wield a net in the UK again, I will breed from a gravid female instead, of legal species, that way I get a small series, release back what is not needed and then l leave that species alone and move on. I know of many people who do likewise. The reason I fell in love with entomology is because of being out in the field, the joy of being outdoors on a summers day collecting. When I was a boy nobody cared, in fact on one disused railway line where I lived it was not usual to see maybe 10 individuals collecting away peacefully, harming nobody and enjoying life to the full. In the UK collecting of wild butterflies is dead and buried, luckily most moths are not protected, yet, and I have turned my attention to these, a lot of the larger bodied species are still held in revulsion, a lot are not showy, therefore they don't attract any attention, but I'll wager that those who cry foul think nothing of destroying wasps, flies and spiders that invade their space with the same self righteous opinions that they have on this subject.
"think he will get an exemplary punishment"
You are correct Radovan, they will throw the book at him to deter anybody else from even thinking about doing the same, you have to question this man's sanity doing what he did, he must have known the consequences, it's just not worth it.

When you look at the system of hunting in Germany, where one hunter is responsible for one hunting ground, takes care of the forest, records animals and plants, and also hunts of course, I thought that might be a perfect example of how you can have people with knowledge in a position responsible for nature. If every meadow etc were attributed to an entomologist, who is responsible for the habitat, records food plants, developments, temperature, adult butterfly population, and of course scientifically collects specimens every year for verification, then no butterfly would go extinct. This would also yield fantastic numbers for climate change, nature development and protection.
