Dear friends,
Just back from few days in Koh Phiphi, Thailand. The jungle in the North of the island is still pristine and I have met many splendid insects, doing about 4 hours walk a day in the jungle.
My best shot (maybe in my whole life) is this huge robber fly (about 3 cm) with its lunch in his legs. The HD shot is impressive as you can see each hair and spine of the monster and those red eyes staring at you !
If anyone can identify the robber fly and its victim, I would be grateful.

Eh, too bad you didn't visit Chiang Mai this time , we could arrange here ICF meeting and have some nice collecting time ;(

Very impressive photograph. I took some images of a large hairy species in the Alps, but mine was not enjoying his lunch of a Hoverfly.  |

Very impressive photograph. I took some images of a large hairy species in the Alps, but mine was not enjoying his lunch of a Hoverfly. Gerard Pennards, a dipterologist, tells me that the prey is an Ichneumon wasp. True that we seems to see an ovipositor behind the robber fly legs, even if it may be something else... I need to check my other pictures.

You can also see the left hindwing of the prey so it cannot be a dipteran, since Diptera only have a single pair of wings.

Yes, you are right, not a Diptera, has the eye of a wasp.
