Photo taken July 24, 2016 in the Bighorn Mountains of central Wyoming, ca. 7000'. There were about 20 Speyeria of several species on this one thistle (I had to reduce the image area to get it below 1 meg for posting), and there was about a mile of dirt road lined with similarly filled thistles. I can't tell you the species names until I get them spread, though. A few coppers, Satyrs, and Pierids accompanied the fritillaries. Cheers, jh

Wow! I love stumbling upon a gold mine like that (more of an "orange with silver spots" mine in this case). I'm looking forward to seeing your species list. Did you capture any of the non-fritillaries you saw?

Nathan,
It was about 95% Speyeria. The Pierids and satyrs were all very worn, and the single Papilo I saw was ragged out too. I took a few coppers (oddly, no blues or hairstreaks were present). I think I was a couple of weeks late in the season for much besides Speyeria. Actually, I'm confident of having S. edwardsi and mormonia ssp., but he others will take some study to identify. Cheers, jh
