I just read a blog about a collector who uses a blacklight to attract flying insects. In his case it is beetles. I checked out several stores online but could find nothing affordable available. Prices were in the hundreds of dollars. Does anyone use this method, and if so, where are the lights sold and how much do they cost ?

I know that fluorescent tube-style blacklights are available at many hardware stores and aren't particularly cheap, but certainly aren't hundreds of dollars. The tough part would be how to power it outdoors. If you have a overhead fluorescent light fixture with ballast, I think you'd be able to use it outdoors anywhere you could run an extension cord to. Otherwise you're looking at buying a portable generator, which can be very expensive.
