Hello Mokky and JM, I have been in Kawasaki about 2 years ago to give lectures too, I also recall to have seen so many butterflies in Parks, unlike in Paris . I could take two days off for me, travelling west to the Mounts Odake, Daibosatsurei and Gongen area. It was really impressive. To my knowledge, it was not forbidden to collect species unless under protection status and in protected area. Cheers, Xavier

Thank you jmg and Xavier for sharing your stories in Japan. Yes, it is true that our country is small but fortunately touching several climate zones. Therefore we are blessed with relatively rich insect fauna. In addition, Japanese people basically like nature and we have good parks even in the center of huge cities like Tokyo or Osaka. There we can see not a few insects.
Of course collecting is prohibited in designated areas such as the national parks or endangered species protected by law. However it is OK to collect insects which are not included in such conditions. Many Japanese people enjoy collecting insects. Recently by the advancement of digital camera/video, many people are focused on pictures and films. They do not like collecting and sometimes call us "net man". It causes some conflict in the field.
Please do come and enjoy Japanese insects together with good Japanese food and culture. If I can help you guys in any way, it is my pleasure. Please feel free to ask me.
Mokky

For my part, I dream to visit Hokkaido (then move to Sakhalin) to meet the local Parnassinae (and eat crabs! ). This is a travel project that I have been thinking about for some time!

Hi I’m tanya, a regular person trying to indentify a bug and hope to hear it’s not a tick. Maybe this is a professional group and if I’m in the wrong place apologies! Eco pest guy was over and he went back and forth between a tick and “a bug I can’t remeber the name of”.. basically I need to know if I should cancel my kids birthday party so no one gets Lyme disease! Thanks, Tanya

Tanya,
Welcome to the forum. Post a photo (preferably not blurry) in the Insect identification section and tell us where in the world you are (approximate location is important), hopefully someone will then be able to tell you what it is.
Adam.

Hello everyone! I'm a homeschooling mom of one son who's very interested in butterflies. I confess to not knowing very much, but I'm hoping to learn a lot here and pass that knowledge on to my son who has a passion for entomology.

You are a new member here, please tell us more about you and your passion. It is a little tradition of this forum. Hello, I'm a lepidopteran from Sweden. I was planning to go to Portugal at the end of April 2019 to collect butterflies. Is there anyone who knows some good areas to go to Portugal to find many kinds of butterflies?. Also looking for a travel companion who is interested in collecting butterflies.
