According to Afrotropical Butterflies and Skippers: "D'Abrera (1980) and Henning (1989) suggested that Charaxes legeri might be a hybrid between Charaxes jasius epijasius and Charaxes castor. Larsen (2005a), however, gives a cogent argument for considering Charaxes legeri to be a distinct species. See also St Leger, 1984."

It was a species when I curated the specimen. See in Henning's book "The Charaxinae Butterflies of Africa" Published 2000. A strong argument put forward as to it being a species and not a hybrid.
Barcoding may be useful once again but somewhat difficult to access their locality!
