I just started building a new, and simple, website with the goal of displaying specimens I've collected and perhaps helping others ID their specimens. Before I get too far into constructing it, I thought it would be helpful to see what you all thought. So to that end, here's a link to what I've got in place so far: congobutterflies.wifeo.com/danainae.phpPlease give me any feedback you might have. Thanks! Tom

First of all : congrats for this useful initiative ! Hope you will create a reference website !
Some comments : - your website is not mobile friendly, which is a pity for many users (this is due to wifeo) - you should add a link page, to exchange links with other insect website and make your website known - I would add the species name below the specimen even on the family page.
Great ! Hope you will manage to make it grow and popular.

your website is not mobile friendly, which is a pity for many users (this is due to wifeo) You know, I wasn't expecting this to be a website people would use on mobile devices, but I'll see if there's anything I can do. you should add a link page, to exchange links with other insect website and make your website known That's a good idea. I would add the species name below the specimen even on the family page. Is the name not displaying when you hover over the specimen?

Tom, I looked at your website on my iPhone and for me it is easy to navigate and it is very clear. The names are on the pictures however I would place them under the picture not on top , so the specimen can be seen even without clicking the link to see all details.
Great idea , it will be for sure good reference web but a tons of work have to be done yet. Keep up and don't give up ...

Ok, I did some tweaking on the mobile stuff... I don't know if it's better or not. There doesn't seem to be a way for me to get the labels directly beneath the appropriate specimen on mobile either (at least not without drastically changing the regular site).
I'm also trying to figure out how to make it more evident that clicking on the photos of the specimens brings you to a large recto/verso of them without having to plaster text all over the place... maybe a short message on the home page?

Yeah, on the non-mobile platform this feature is only there when you hover over the image... which I think is pretty neat... but not so neat on mobile, where it's permanently displayed. I'm trying to simulate the look/feel of a drawer, which I think is accomplished well enough when viewed with a computer. Do most people use a mobile device when using websites like this? (Personally, I almost exclusively use my laptop.)

I prefer laptop for one reason: larger screen. But I use more my iPhone for another reason: it is always with me and more handy.

Do most people use a mobile device when using websites like this? 22% of Collector's Secret and 25% of the ICF visits are done on mobile and the weight of mobile is growing strongly year after year.

The website looks great cabintom!! Also the mobile support does work, I don't know if this has been fixed before I saw it, or if Olivier simply has turned off Javascript on his phone. It looks neat and simple, this is the most important for websites. I saw your flickr collection and I am looking forward to this collection. About the links... you have two options now, stay in 1990s or go with time, you want to go with time? First of all mobile support, second LINKS ARE OLDSCHOOL. Nowadays, nobody does it anymore! It's a waste of space, unless of course you want to celebrate the internet of the 90s. Traffic will be generated through google or advertising on Facebook. At the moment it also loads very fast, and if you want to leave it like that, leave your fingers off additional JavaScript, and DO NOT add a page counter to your website. If you want to track how successful your page is add google analytics, but don't put these nasty little boxes that show you how many daily visitors and from where they came from (see bottom of this page). They load an additional style sheet, make a call to an external server and run a bunch of JavaScript. It just makes your page slow without any added information. What can I show you as a reference to prove that I know at least the basics? www.label-butterflies.com is from me and has been entirely coded within a text editor only! The page is from 2013, I would never again put the google translate onto a website (at the time a fancy gimmick) and I became super lazy for the stats page. (You can see that one when logged in). The game itself is running server wise and not with JavaScript because back in the days I wasn't able to do so. There is no mobile support as once again I was lacking the time, my job keeps me very busy since two years...and I put every single amount of free time into my new website which hopefully comes online also early this year. Stay tuned. Sorry for the heated language, must be the Coca Cola I'm having for breakfast.

22% of Collector's Secret and 25% of the ICF visits are done on mobile and the weight of mobile is growing strongly year after year. Yes, I can see browsing a forum on a mobile device. I guess what I'm wondering is if people habitually use their phones/iPads/etc. when working on identifications. I'm not concerned about making money with the website (the adverts you might see are how wifeo is able to make the service free and with unlimited storage), but I do want to be able to display my collection and build a good reference resource that others can use. don't put these nasty little boxes that show you how many daily visitors and from where they came from (see bottom of this page). They load an additional style sheet, make a call to an external server and run a bunch of JavaScript. It just makes your page slow without any added information. Thank you for this advice! Add a button "click to enlarge" like this below the pictures Unfortunately, that's not going to integrate well thanks to some of wifeo's limitations... I'm thinking of adding text that appears on hover to that effect, but then the text would be permanently present on mobile, so not ideal.

About the links... you have two options now, stay in 1990s or go with time, you want to go with time? First of all mobile support, second LINKS ARE OLDSCHOOL. Nowadays, nobody does it anymore! I fully disagree, both in terms of traffic and in terms of SEO ranking. don't put these nasty little boxes that show you how many daily visitors and from where they came from (see bottom of this page). Depends. About Feedjit that I use, it all depends if you want to learn which page are interesting for your visitors, how they find your website, from where they come and so on, with more transparency than Google Analytics. So if you don't care about improving your website, yes you can avoid adding it. I spend in digital spendings 2 million euros per year for my company and my company websites have 3 Million visitors per year... I see Google, Facebook top management team every month... It helps me learn things that I have applied to develop CS, the ICF and Insecterra. Cheers from the 90ies

So, I've abandoned this project. Ran into a few of the "catches" that ultimately discouraged me from continuing with this avenue. First, after 30 days they add even more advertisements to your website. It became overly obnoxious. Secondly, and more importantly, although they'll allow for unlimited photo hosting you have to ask for new allotments of space 10mb at a time. 10mb! Basically, I'd get two species uploaded and have to wait 2 days for the next allotment of space in order to keep working. With over 450 species already in my collection this was just not bearable.
Thanks for those who took time to make suggestions.

Drop the large pics, 500kb a picture has enough information content!
