I'm curious as to why you use those sort of pins (wolf) on your specimens ? Are you unable to get proper insect pins for your specimens ? Do your specimens each have an individual data label ?

Thailand is a nice and friendly country to collect butterfly. I have made 3 collecting trips there. Just respect their National Parks and list of protected species (to make it simple, don't catch Papilionidae, Amathusiidae and Riodinidae) and you'll be fine. Don't know if Koh Samet is rich in butterflies. Will be interesting to have your report from there. The link to protected species in Thailand www.collector-secret.com/index.php/advertise/test/list-protected-insects-thailand/Originally posted by Adam Do not ever try to collect in National Parks and wildlife sanctuaries. Thais are really strict about it and don't ask locals if it's ok to collect in any country unless you want to collect on some private property. They have no ideas about law of the country they live in and also the law usually does not apply to them in many cases like that. Paul

I agree with Paul, it doesn't matter if the land is inside a marine National Park it is still illegal to collect anything there. It is also illegal to take a stone, sand from the beach, a flower or leaves, and anything else that is in the national park.
The local buildings, hotels etc on Koh Samet are mostly actually there illegally too. The only legal structures are those that were there before the island was declared a National Park, except for those built by the National Park itself.
Adam.
PS. I don't know where wollastoni got the idea about Riodinidae being protected in Thailand. Most species of Papilionidae and Amathusiidae are also not protected. The only protected species are those in the list in the link Paul K posted above.

Do your specimens each have an individual data label ? i had just started collecting again since my childhood, and i was not so into the whole thing with equipment etc, i actually used a fishingnet to catch butterflies. I have been planning to respread and change the pins and also i have data just not printed the labels and put them on. Regarding Koh Samet beeing a national park i had no idae at the time i just follwed what the locals said...

I went once few years ago on family vacation to Dominican Republic and I have decided to spend half day or so on collecting. I could not find any info about collecting there , so I asked locals at the hotel and the guy who worked there took me to his family home to collect there , although I have got only couple of butterflies there. He was insuring me that I can collect what ever I want in DR it's free country , no problem. After sometimes later I found article about collecting in Dominican Republic. To collect permit is required and export permit as well. Paul

Tiass You can collect outside national parks in Thailand . Many people do and you are allowed to but not protected species. Thailand is rather quiet place and if you are getting your way you should have no problem. Thais don't bother tourists because that is there major income there ( Thai islands ) and they really understand that and will treat you very well.
Paul
PS As better reference about this country you should ask Adam. He is being here for many years.
