Alex emailed me a couple of weeks ago. His attorney is trying to get a probationary sentence. I wrote a letter of support on his behalf. I have not heard how things went last week.

I recently ordered from an ebay seller, naturalselection527. When I paid it said it was paid to Bicbugs LLC. That's his company, right? Who runs it now?

It only looks easy and you understand wrong the US law. He is on probation and his criminal record will hunt him till last breath. $500.00 is nothing to that. If they would figure out he's an honest guy he would be discharged.

If so, very sad. He's a good man.
But in the past, there have been some HUGE fine in the US for insect illegal import so I guess they understood he is not a bad guy

Gentlemen, let's not forget that those 1000 insects he brought back were most likely confiscated so factor in that loss. And then there is the cost of his lawyer's fees to prevent him from going to jail. $10,000 USD. and maybe more since his case has been going on at least a year. It's still all less than what he earns in a month (20 K) according to the article. But, he will forever remain under the scrutiny of USF&W.....

I doubt in 20k earnings per month. That's $240,000.00 profit per year selling butterflies! Why don't we all quit our jobs and start selling insects.

Must be per year indeed... and turnover instead of earnings. Disinformation.

240 k is possible for a professional. I know at least one doing 300 k per year.

The fine in fact was very low, especially for the amount and type of butterflies he was trying to let us say " get in " Anyone who wants to know what can happen should read Winged Obsession. Their is big money to be made from butterflies especially for those that do not pay for or apply for permits.

"Winged Obsession" was the worst piece of journalism I ever read. No real attempt to just understand a little bit about collection, very one-sided cheap rabble-rousing. And at least I had expected that she would have tried to go on an expedition with illegal butterfly poachers in some of the interesting countries. Nothing. She prides herself of having talked with that Japanese trader once, and everything else is just the talk of one police officer. Very very disappointing book.
